The photo was taken in the atrium of Colégio Salesiano de Lisboa in 1995, the year the album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins, Miguel N.’s future favourite band, came out. We were in 9th grade, João C. and Filipa N. were in love, Pedro C.C. dreamed of becoming a footballer and Rui A. went on television to imitate Mickael Jackson. Almost everyone had a nickname: Testa Rossa, Cavalona, Splinter, Beaver, Chinaman, Dumbo. I, seventh from the left in the back row, was Olivia Palito.
In 2019 – 24 years later – I sought out each of my classmates to talk about that time and the direction life took after this photo was taken.
